FCOC Executive Committee votes to pursue Florida Sales Exemption on new and used cranes:
The FCOC Executive Committee unanimously approved pursuing new Florida legislation that will exempt sales tax on purchases of new and used cranes. FCOC has retained Rick Watson & Associates of Tallahassee to promote this legislation during the upcoming session of the Florida legislature. Florida is one of the few states to see consistent recovery in non-residential construction since the 2008 / 09 recession. Many Florida crane owners continue to struggle with keeping crane fleets utilized and employees current with new Federal law outlined in 29 CFR 1926 OSHA Cranes & Derrick in Construction passed in 2010. To be compliant with OSHA’s new law Florida crane owners must spend thousands of dollars on training, qualifying and certifying employees who work directly with or on cranes in their fleet. Several Florida crane owners have gone out of business during the past 6 or 7 years because of lack of construction activity and the cost to be compliant with new federal OSHA law.
A Florida sales tax exemption law was approved during the last legislative session for certain components on concrete mixer trucks sold in Florida. Through discussions with Rick Watson & Associates, FCOC Executive Board feels the timing is right to pursue tax relief for all Florida crane owners. Estimated cost for pursuing this tax exemption legislation is approximately $28,000 to $30,000. FCOC is in the process of forming a PAC to assist with this effort. FCOC will be soliciting financial support from all Florida crane owners and crane related services companies in pursuit of the legislation.
